Registration takes place twice a year, in September and January. Today, more than 1,246 volunteers are serving at least 2,845 students in 12 school districts across Central Texas, by sitting with elementary children each week for 30 minutes to read one-on-one. There is a nominal registration fee and the classes are funded through the New York State Adult Education budget. In 2010-11, we began reading with students at 1 elementary school in Leander ISD. Participants attend class five days a week, Monday through Friday, from 9:30 A.M. The staff consists of teachers from the school district and volunteers, many of whom are retired teachers. In this way, family literacy skills are enhanced.ĭuring the year workshops are provided in such areas as women’s health, nutrition, financial literacy, immigration issues and home and personal safety. In addition, a children’s library enhances the learning of English since mothers can borrow books to bring home to read to their children after they practice reading the books in class. Through grants and the generosity of benefactors, the Learning Connection is well equipped with computers and SmartBoards for class instruction. Additional classes are provided in basic literacy and for those seeking to earn the High School Equivalency diploma. The only requirements are they must be at least 18 years old, be cleared by district(s) background check, complete Education Connection training, and commit to at least 30 minutes a week to read with students.
